Spring is on the horizon, but it sometimes takes the weather a while to catch up with the reality on your calendar. Because of that, climate control is particularly important at this time of year for people of all ages, especially seniors.
Aging results in less fat beneath the skin, which can challenge the body’s ability to regulate temperature in cold temperatures, according to the National Institutes of Health. Conversely, sweating happens at a lower rate as you age, making it harder to tell when you are too hot.
As the temperature fluctuates this season, keep a few tips in mind that can help you prepare for any climate conditions outdoors and inside your home.
When temperatures are cold or conditions are windy, remember to:
- Bundle up with two layers of clothing, an extra-heavy jacket or a hat and gloves.
- Spend as little time outdoors as possible to decrease the risk of hypothermia or other illnesses stemming from too much exposure to frigid temperatures.
- Use an easy-to-read thermostat indoors to ensure your home is maintaining a comfortable temperature.
- Enjoy using your fireplace for a few final times this season if you have one, but remember to check the batteries in your smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector to ensure safety.
- Keep in touch with older neighbors to verify they’re also safe and warm.
If you encounter warmer temperatures, keep in mind that you should:
- Drink plenty of water, as more sunlight and heat means more water is being sapped from your body through perspiration.
- Always wear sunscreen to protect your skin from damage.
- Take frequent breaks to prevent exhaustion or injury.
- Revise your wardrobe with a selection of lighter-weight clothes than you use in cold temperatures.
- Enjoy a cool shower after spending time out in the sun to bring your temperature back to a balanced level.
Weather can swing wildly at this time of year, so be prepared and enjoy the ride. Spring is here!
