The Vital Role of Nutrition in Your Recovery After Surgery

When you think about recovering after a surgery in the hospital, you probably think about getting up out of bed, walking on your own and following a prescription for therapy that will enable you to function normally and get back to your highest level of independence – and, preferably, doing it in the shortest amount of time possible.

What you likely did not think about is the very important role that nutrition plays in revitalizing your body and supporting your healthy recovery.

Part of a Best Practice Recovery Plan

Kristi Dougherty, RN, BSN, MSM, MBA Administrator of Vernon Manor Health Care Center, says, “Along with advanced technology, best practice therapies and customized therapy plans, leading national Post-Hospital Rehabilitation Centers today apply the latest in nutrition regimens as part of their comprehensive recovery process. A strong post-surgical nutrition program is a vital ingredient for replenishing and strengthening your body in order to assure the most effective and timely recovery results possible.”

“This is extremely important because nutrition deficiencies in your diet after surgery can impede the normal recovery process and reduce your chances for an optimal recovery.”

The Importance of Nutrition in Your Post-Surgery Recovery

Surgery is a significant event for your body and experts tell us that a highly nutritious diet can support your complete recovery in several ways. For example, better nutrition can:

  • Help to replace any blood loss
  • Help your incisions heal
  • Provide the raw materials your immune system needs to protect you against infection
  • Increase your level of energy
  • Help to repair your skin, nerves, blood vessels, muscle and bone

In her article,Nutrition After Surgery: What You Need to Know for a Speedy Recovery,” Tina Ruggiero, MS, RD, LD, a nutrition expert and award-winning author, says, “If you’ve been an active, independent adult for most of your life, suddenly finding yourself a patient can be demoralizing and even depressing. Having worked with many clients in a post-operative setting, I know that rehabilitation and recovery is different for everyone; however, good nutrition after surgery can speed wound healing, improve immunity and ensure the best outcome.”

“It doesn’t matter if you’ve had a joint replaced, a hysterectomy or a bypass operation, the body requires extra nutrients to heal, so focusing on nutrition can mean the difference between quickly bouncing back and a lengthy recovery.”

She adds, “On average, a person can expect to lose five to ten percent of their total body weight after surgery. To infuse the body with calories and nutrition, consider protein first. Protein is needed to repair tissue, slow muscle catabolism and decrease the inflammatory phase. Post-operative protein requirements range from 1.5 to 2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. For elective surgery, the lower end of the range is sufficient. For major surgery, the higher end of the spectrum is more appropriate.”
